EXPERIENCE:

Feb. 2010 – present: Conservation and Sustainability Consultant, Oasis Earth, Anchorage,Alaska – Conservation and sustainability consulting globally. Advise NGOs, governments,industry, and the public on environmental sustainability issues, including biodiversity andhabitat protection, establishment of Citizens Advisory Councils to oversee resource development projects, extractive industry responsibility, energy and environment issues, Arctic issues, marine conservation, etc. Advised on Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico disaster, Dalian oil spill in China, Bodo oil spill in Nigeria, extractive industry and environment issues in Africa, Central America, and South Pacific.

July 1996 – Feb. 2010: Professor and Conservation Specialist - University of Alaska Marine Advisory Program (MAP), School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, Anchorage, Alaska. Primary responsibility for University of Alaska's Environmental Conservation Extension Mission. Activities have included the following: developed Application of Lessons Learned program to provide environmental assistance / consultation internationally (Korea, Japan, South America, Central Asia, South Asia, Africa, Russia, Europe, etc.); served as Chief Technical Advisor to Government of Pakistan for the Tasman Spirit Oil Spill damage assessment; advisor to Government of Lebanon on 2006 Lebanon oil spill; proposed Alaska Climate Impact Assessment Commission to Alaska Legislature, adopted unanimously; Co-founder and Facilitator of the Shipping Safety Partnership; served on IUCN Independent Scientific Review Panel for Sakhalin II Offshore Oil and Gas Project; served on International Advisory Group for Caspian Revenue Watch (Open Society Institute); continued producing/hosting Alaska Resource Issues Forum public television series; taught commercial fisheries technology, management, and conservation workshops in Russia and in western Alaska; participated in derelict fishing gear retrieval on central Pacific atolls; many presentations at various meetings, conferences, workshops on marine / environmental topics; provided technical information on oil transportation issues internationally; continued to provide media liaison on oil issues, in particular the Exxon Valdez spill; taught various short courses/workshops; served as Marine Advisory Program Assistant Director 1997 - 2002.
